Jarvis Engineering Helps Power the Future with Smith Campus Project in Langley

With the future of education in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Jarvis Engineering is playing a key role in the new Smith Campus middle and secondary schools project for School District No. 35 in Langley, BC.

This ambitious initiative will bring two new schools to one campus in the Willoughby area. The middle school will have a capacity of 900 students, while the secondary school will accommodate 1,900 students. With over $200 million in funding from the provincial government, this marks the largest investment ever made by the Ministry of Education and Child Care in a school project in British Columbia.

Jarvis Engineering is proud to provide the electrical design that will bring these learning environments to life. The schools will feature a wide range of spaces designed to support diverse learning needs. These include learning commons, general instruction areas, science and special education rooms, gender-neutral washrooms, gymnasiums, and multi-purpose rooms. The middle school will also have a Neighbourhood Learning Centre, which will include childcare facilities.

A core element of this project is sustainability. Both schools will incorporate energy-efficient designs and a greenhouse gas reduction strategy, aligning with British Columbia’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Rather than on-site playfields, this project will prioritize outdoor spaces, allowing students access to the future Township-owned playing fields at Smith Athletic Park.

Design work for the project is already underway, led by Thinkspace in collaboration with School District No. 35 and Make Projects. The design process is expected to continue through winter 2025, followed by construction. Both schools are scheduled to open their doors in September 2027, welcoming students to an innovative and environmentally conscious learning space.
